Note: Nancy H. Kolodny is a Professor of Chemistry and the Nellie Zuckerman Cohen and Anne Cohen Heller Professor of Health Sciences at Wellesley College. A member of the faculty since 1969, she is an internationally recognized authority on nuclear magnetic resonance and its application to problems in medicine and biology. She served as Dean of the College from 1992 until 1999.
A 1964 graduate of Wellesley College, Dean Kolodny received a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1969. From 1971 to 1972 she was a Research Fellow in Medicine at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital. From 1970 through 1972 Dr. Kolodny was a Radcliffe Institute Fellow.
Dr. Kolodny's work in the field of nuclear magnetic resonance and ocular disorders has been supported by the American Diabetes Association, Lions Club International, the National Eye Institute, the American Association of University Women, Research Corporation Cottrell College, the National Science Foundation, and the National Institute of Health. Her most recent major awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1991 in support of her work on Magnetic-Resonance Studies in Ocular Physiology, NSF Grants with biology Professor Mary Allen in support of their work on NMR studies of cyanobacteria and in support of their purchase of the state-of-the-art NMR equipment for Wellesley College, and, in conjunction with Paula Rayman of the Wellesley College Center for Research on Women, a $250,000 grant from the Sloan Foundation for research on factors that influence women to pursue careers in science. She was awarded Wellesley College's Pinanski Prize for Excellence in Teaching in 1991.
Dr. Kolodny's professional appointments have included a position on the board of trustees of the New England Regional Computing Program, and memberships in the Admissions Testing Program (Chemistry Achievement Test Development Committee), The College Board; and the Selection Panel for Faculty Development Awards, Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. She has also served as President of the Corporation of the Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Boston and is a founding board member of the New Jewish High School of Greater Boston.
Dr. Kolodny has lectured extensively on her research and has been a guest speaker at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and Technion (Israel Institute of Technology). Her articles and abstracts appear frequently in medical journals and textbooks.
An active member of the Wellesley College community, Professor Kolodny was Co-Director of the Computer Literacy Project from 1976 to 1982, Director of the Science Center from 1974 to 1976, and was Dean of the Class of 1976 from 1972 to 1974. She has also served on the President's Advisory Council, and the Wellesley-MIT Liaison Committee, among others. She is a member of Sigma Xi, the American Chemical Society, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.
